In a recent conversation with PTI, Deepak Mehrotra, the Managing Director and CEO of Byju’s Aakash Education Services Ltd (AESL), shed light on the evolving dynamics of the edtech industry. Mehrotra emphasized that the influx of investor funding in the sector has spurred behaviors that may not be conducive to its long-term growth.

He underscored the limitations of digital platforms in meeting the aspirations of students aiming for prestigious medical and engineering institutions. Mehrotra stressed the importance of addressing the diverse needs of learners, highlighting the necessity of a multifaceted approach to education.

“Investors’ funding is very clearly driving behaviors which are not good for anyone, I only hope sanity prevails,” remarked Mehrotra, who assumed the role of AESL’s CEO recently.

Addressing the transformations within the edtech and test preparatory landscape, Mehrotra acknowledged the trend of traditional brick-and-mortar institutions venturing into the digital realm, and vice versa. However, he cautioned against overreliance on digital platforms for high-stakes examinations preparation.

“While digital platforms cater to the needs of new learners, those aspiring for premier Indian institutions require a more comprehensive approach,” Mehrotra stated, emphasizing the indispensability of traditional learning methods alongside digital tools.

Looking ahead, Mehrotra outlined AESL’s strategy to engage with digital natives in their preferred language and enhance the digital component within the organization. He highlighted the significance of Ranjan Pai’s investment from the Manipal Group, signifying a pivotal moment for AESL as established education entrepreneurs lend their expertise to the company.

With over three decades of experience spanning various industries, Mehrotra brings a wealth of knowledge to his role at AESL. His diverse background includes executive positions at prominent organizations such as Ashirvad Pipes, Pearson India, Bharti Airtel, Coca-Cola, and Asian Paints. A graduate of IIT Roorkee, Mehrotra’s commitment to lifelong learning is evident in his executive program completion from The Wharton School, Philadelphia.

As the edtech landscape continues to evolve, Mehrotra’s insights offer valuable perspectives on navigating the challenges and opportunities in the sector.
